DBT Program vs. DBT Therapy
There's a significant distinction between a DBT program and DBT therapy. In this article, I will provide a detailed breakdown of both, so you can make an informed decision about DBT and determine which option might be best for you.
If you're new to DBT and want to learn more about what it is, please check out our article here. PRGRS Therapy is a small, group practice, in New York City dedicated to providing quality mental health care to people. We specialize in DBT and are pleased to make this type of therapy accessible to people.
"Official" DBT Programs
Originally, DBT was designed to operate within the structure of a program. Such programs often include daily services, comprising group sessions, individual therapy, and 24/7 phone coaching. These programs can extend over several months, with some lasting more than a year. Many individuals find these programs highly beneficial.
DBT-Informed Programs
There are also DBT-informed programs, often found in settings like partial hospital programs or intensive outpatient programs with a dedicated DBT track. While these programs may closely resemble the "official" program, they might not encompass all its components.
DBT Therapy
DBT is an extremely adaptable approach. Many of its tools and skills can be taught on an individual basis.
Clinicians trained in DBT, like us at PRGRS, conduct DBT-informed therapy. In other words, they do not run a program but instead incorporate elements of DBT into their clinical practice. Some providers closely adhere to the DBT program, while others tailor their approach to each client's unique needs.
Even on an individual level, DBT has the potential to be remarkably effective for a variety of issues, including anxiety, ADHD, addiction, impulse control, and more.
