How to Get Accommodations for ADHD in NYC

What are workplace or school accommodations?

Accommodations are modifications that are made to a workplace or classroom that help a person work with challenges they experience as a result of an issue they are dealing with. For example, many people with ADHD benefit from having extra time on tests. This is an example of an accommodation in the classroom.

Why you might need accommodations.

ADHD can make work and/or school tasks difficult. It can take longer to get things done, staying organized can be challenging, and remaining motivated may be some of the issues you deal with in the workplace or classroom. Many people develop their own strategies to cope with issues brought on by ADHD, yet there are some issues that may require accommodations.

People may deal with shame and guilt when requiring accommodations. For example, many of our clients feel if they just try a little harder they will remember tasks better. Although putting effort into improving is a good thing, there are ADHD issues that are not fixed by simply working on them. This is where accommodations can be helpful.

How to obtain accommodations

The process of obtaining formal accommodations can be challenging and time consuming. A great place to start the process is by visiting the Job Accommodation Network (JAN) website. This will familiarize you with your rights, as well as ideas for how to communicate with your school or workplace.

You will then want to speak with someone at your school (a guidance counselor, advisor, social worker) or workplace (HR department) about what they require in order to begin making accommodations. Although every institution may have a slightly different approach, a majority will follow these steps.

First, if you already have a diagnosis of ADHD, you will need to obtain documentation from your provider. Many places want extensive reports about what testing has been done, the findings, and recommended accommodations. This is why it’s important to check with the institution you are seeking accommodations from as they will often provide a sample report to you.

If you have not received a diagnosis, you will want to find a provider who can conduct testing as well as provide a report that may be required by your school or workplace.

At PRGRS Therapy we conduct comprehensive ADHD testing and provide extensive reports for your school or workplace. If you are interested in being tested for ADHD, please contact us today to schedule your free 15 minute phone consultation.

Once you have a report with a formal diagnosis and recommended accommodations you will work with your institution to ensure these accommodations are helpful and adhered to. Continue to use JAN as a resource to ensure you are being treated fairly.
