An Overview of Treatment for ADHD

ADHD treatment overview

We have recently been reading a book titled “Driven to Distraction” by Dr. Edward Hallowell. It provides education, information, stories, tips, and guidance all about ADHD. The book has been a useful resource for both our clinicians and our clients. In the book Dr. Hallowell provides a “Synopsis of Treatment for ADHD”. This is an overview of the different components involved in ADHD treatment. This article is a summary of that synopsis.

Before we begin…

ADHD treatment is often multifactorial. In other words, it requires multiple interventions to be most successful. Treatment may include therapy, medication management, and coaching for some and just medication management and coaching for others. There is no single combination that is prescribed, but rather treatment should be uniquely tailored to an individuals needs. With this in mind, let’s review some of the most common forms of ADHD treatment.

Comprehensive ADHD treatment includes:

Diagnosis

The first step in treatment is to obtain an accurate diagnosis. To learn more about ADHD testing, check out our other article here. Many other issues present like ADHD and vise verse. For example, some thyroid issues may present like ADHD. We certainly don’t want to be prescribing treatment for ADHD when it’s actually a thyroid issue. Be sure to obtain an accurate diagnosis from an experienced clinician to make sure you are actually dealing with ADHD. Education

Dr. Hallowell mentions over and over in his book that education is the single most important aspect of ADHD treatment. We also agree. Educating yourself about ADHD: what it is, how it impacts you, etc. is crucial. You can learn from clinicians and you can learn on your own. The point is to learn about ADHD from credible sources. Also, you can educate your loved ones, which is very helpful.

Coaching

Coaching is often mixed up with therapy, although they are different. A coach will help someone with ADHD with practical tasks such as organizing, time management, prioritizing, etc. A coach may provide accountability and encouragement as well.

Therapy

A therapist is going to use clinical tools and interventions, such as DBT therapy, mindfulness, etc., to help a client better manage symptoms of ADHD. At PRGRS Therapy we use DBT therapy, an evidence based treatment, to help clients successfully manage their ADHD. In addition, a therapist will be able to process through emotions and personal history to help a client develop greater insight into themselves

Medication Management

A major component of ADHD treatment is medication management. There are several medications that are shown to be effective in the treatment of ADHD. It is important that these medications be prescribed by a clinician experienced in ADHD treatment.
